You've Gotta Read to Write

To write you have to read and I've always been a voracious reader...anything I can get my hands on...novels,  newspapers, magazines, cereal boxes...you name it I'll read it. And I really sit-up-and-take-notice when another writer shares insights into their writing process. Who knows when you'll learn something from someone else's experience?

So when I came across this blog article and admitted to myself that I wasn't the only one who sometimes (Who am I fooling?) struggles to get a good start I had to share it.

In his simple blog post the author not only shared his first draft struggles but even reminded us that greats like Kurt Vonnegut share the same battles we all do. With this simple poster he gives us a few suggestions to get that first draft out of the way.

Welcome

I’ve done all kinds of writing. Like most writers I started in school where, if you think about it, you get your first taste of meeting deadlines and facing critiques not to mention being able to show off your creativity and imagination.

Advancing through learning sentence and paragraph structure you begin to write short stories and essays. Oh, and what about book reports…which at some point I realized are little more than book reviews (Was that my first taste of blogging?).

Then came reports, term papers and thesis. I found I really enjoyed doing the research for these unlike most of my fellow students. When it came to crunch time we worked in teams…guess who got to do everyone’s research. I didn’t mind though. Little did I know at the time that I was strengthening a skill I would get paid for later.

I began writing articles, news stories, blogs, web content, ads, you name it and once again I am offering my skills to the public.

Welcome to my world.
